Ice, Ice Baby

For our fourth (and final) Olympic sporting event, we headed off to the Thunderbird Arena at the University of British Columbia to watch a classification game of Women's Ice Hockey. Even though it was a beautiful, sunny day we were excited about attending our last (indoor) event in Vancouver.

We gave ourselves plenty of time to get to UBC and to go through security. With about an hour to spare, we decided to hang outside of the arena and take some photos. Both Rebecca and Joshua were wearing their new Canadian attire and Olympic pin collection

Upon entering the arena the kids had a chance to get a photograph taken with three Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers.

Today's match up is between Switzerland and China. Because we arrived early, we were able to watch both teams warm up on the ice before the game.

Team Switzerland

Team China

Neither team had a particularly good record entering into this round; in fact, the Chinese had yet to win a game and the Swiss had only won one game (against Slovakia). While we had decided to cheer for the Swiss, the crowd (because of the large Chinese population in Vancouver) was overwhelmingly rooting for Team China.

The Opening Face-Off

The best two women's ice hockey teams are the U.S. and Canada. The Swiss had one line that could match the best of these two teams, whereas the Chinese had only one player of that caliber.

Two of the best players on the Swiss team are sisters: Stefanie and Julia Marty. Stefanie was a powerhouse at this particular game, scoring 4 of Switzerland's 6 goals. The final score: Switzerland 6, China 0.

My seat mate and new friend, Dana Lessley from Bakersfield, California, was able to capture three of the six goals on film. Thanks, Dana, for the pictures!

Having had "our" team win, we left the arena satisfied and happy. Our Olympic Adventure in Vancouver was a total blast!

Sochi 2014, anyone?
